What is machine learning?

Your inbox knows which emails are spam on its own. Who taught it?

THE OLD WAY

Writing rules by hand

The old way was writing rules by hand: if an email says "you won", it's spam. But spammers just change the wording and get through.

THE NEW WAY

Give the machine lots of examples

Machine learning works differently. Instead of writing rules, you give the machine thousands of labeled examples: this is spam, this is a normal email.

The machine finds the patterns

The machine finds the signs by itself: lots of exclamation marks, unknown senders, pushing you to click a link. Nobody had to write those rules.

AROUND YOU

Machine learning is everywhere

Your phone recognizing your face, voice assistants understanding you, apps suggesting movies: all of them learn from examples like this.

You can teach AI with examples too

Chatbots work the same way. Instead of explaining at length what you want, give it a few examples.
