Why does AI "forget" in long chats?

At the start you told AI to keep it short and fun. After a while, it's writing long and serious. It forgot.

AI works on a desk

Picture AI working at a desk. Every message, yours or its own, is a sheet of paper on the desk. This desk is called the context.

The desk has a limit

No matter how big the desk is, it has a limit. When it's full, the oldest sheets get pushed off, or get buried in the pile, and AI stops noticing them.

New chat = empty desk

And when you start a new chat, the desk is empty. AI remembers nothing from last time, unless the app has a memory feature turned on.

TIP 1

Summarize, then move to a new desk

Tip one: if a chat gets too long, ask AI to sum up what you've agreed on, then paste that summary into a new chat.

TIP 2

Repeat what matters

Tip two: if a request is important, repeat it briefly in your new message.
