One rule for the whole family

Fake voices, fake faces, fake celebrities, fake messages. Mark asks: is there a simple way to keep the whole family safe?

FAMILY PASSWORD

A secret word

Bit suggests: set up a family password. A secret word everyone in the family knows, never texted or posted online.

HOW TO USE IT

Ask when money comes up

If someone calls asking for money urgently, no matter how much the voice or face looks like family, ask for the password. Wrong answer or hesitation? Hang up right away.

PICKING THE WORD

Easy to remember, hard to guess

Pick a phrase that's easy to remember but hard to guess. Don't use pet names or birthdays, because those are often already online.

THE RULES

Four safety rules

Plus three more rules from this series: call back on the saved number, never read out a one-time code to anyone, and money is never urgent.

OLDER RELATIVES

Talk in person

Older people are targeted most. Talk with your grandparents and parents in person, and practice a fake call so they get used to it.
