Mark worries about power

Mark hears that AI uses a crazy amount of electricity, and worries that every question he asks is heating up the planet.

ONE QUESTION

Tiny, one question at a time

Bit says: based on estimates published in 2025, one text question uses about 0.3 Wh of electricity. Boiling a kettle takes about 100 Wh, a few hundred times more.

WATER

Water for cooling

Servers heat up and are cooled with water. One report from Google worked out that each question uses about a few drops of water.

ADDED UP

But it adds up to a lot

The problem is the total. There are billions of questions every day, and making images or videos uses far more power than text. The International Energy Agency predicts data centers' electricity use could double by 2030.

USE IT WISELY

Use just what you need

You don't need to feel guilty about asking AI. But you can use it wisely: pick a small model for small tasks, as in video 18, and write clear prompts so you don't regenerate again and again.
